Red Sandstone
is a classic sedimentary rock formed due to
cementing together of sand sized grains resulting into a solid form.
The size of sand grains are 0.1 mm to 2 mm. Calcium carbonate,
silica and iron combine with the sand grains and grow in form of
crystals around sand grains. Slowly they will be transformed into a
solid form naturally. The hardness of red sandstone depends
on the cementing material.
The cementing material
is either siliceous or ferruginous. Rajasthan is the largest
producer of red sandstone in India. Red sandstone can
be cut, polished and dressed into smooth surface. Various uses of
red sandstone includes a verity of uses such as roofing, flooring,
paving, paneling, beams, pillars, arches, doors and window sills,
wall facing, fence posts, mile stones etc. Red sandstone is
